Well, I was wrong apparently, White's don't have nictitating membranes like a lot of other sharks, they just roll their eyes back in attack mode

Yeah, that's the thing that makes them so impressive. It's not the length. It's that they're built like a tank.

the thing you never get from tv with the size was the girth and height of the thing

Here's a tip, if you see the Great White's old nictitating membrane come down, he's going to attack

Re: Have you ever been 'up close and personal' with a Dangerous Animal?
amazing, was one of nmy bucket list things to do!

there were 3 10-12 foot ones round us, then suddenly they cleared off and this thing that looked like a bus with fins turned up and swam (thankfully gently) into the cage checking us out, if I was feeling brave I could have touched it as it swam past

I wasn't feeling brave lol

the bloke on the boat estimated it to be 16-17 foot. It looked about 40 fucking foot from where i was seeing it!!

A word of warning, they tend to feed around dawn, so you'll be getting picked up at silly o'clock as it was I think about an hours drive from Cape Town to where you get the boat

Re: Have you ever been 'up close and personal' with a Dangerous Animal?
I've always wanted to do that, Eggy. How was it?

I've swum with 'small' six foot reef sharks, but they seem huge in the water. I can't imagine how fucking massive Great Whites must seem.

I've seen them attack cages and bend them

Fuck that, the water would be very brown with me down there

Cheers, Eggy. Will take a look later.

FC, I may well bottle it at the last minute. more worried about the claustrophobia of the cage!

Cough

had four of em round us

and make no mistake those cages would not last 10 seconds if a shark really wanted to get at you,

You won't get me going down with a Great White, no matter how strong the fucking cage is

Wild elephants.

I was working in Nepal and found myself in Bardia National Park in the west of the country. I was staying in a small village close by and hired a retired park ranger to take me into the jungle. To get there from the village, you had to wade across a river, then walk through the jungle along a path of perhaps 400 yards to a large clearing. It was a phenomenal day, utterly exhilarating, as we saw all kinds of animals and birds in their wild habitat - rhinos, a tiger from distance, deer, peacocks, you name it.

The next day, I wanted to go again, but the guide was not available. So I hired two younger lads who claimed to be familiar with the jungle. Again we waded through the river at its lowest point, climbed onto the embankment and walked along that path. An extraordinary sight awaited us as we reached the large clearing. On the other side was a line of wild elephants, eight or ten adults and three or four babies. The guides whispered that they'd never seen something like that before, but cautioned not to move until the elephants were out of sight. When they have the young with them, they explained, elephants become ultra protective.

We walked again for hours, then returned to the clearing a few minutes before sunset. I looked forward to a nice cold beer on return to the village. We found the pathway back to the river, but after a few seconds, the guides both stopped still. Sshh, they said. Then one of them whispered "Elephants!".

Sure enough, a short distance to our right and separated only by the jungle's dense vegetation, were the unmistakable sounds of elephants walking, munching, swishing and make elephant noises.

The three of us stood there for several precious minutes as the sun set quickly. We were now in darkness, made worse by trees above and either side of use blocking out all ambient light.

Still we waited there, motionless, and still the elephant noises continued to our right, slowly edging closer towards us. One guide stepped forward and stood on a dry branch, which cracked loudly. Immediately, all sound from the elephants stopped. We stood there, and the elephants also stood silently some 30 or 40 yards to our right.

Minutes went by and neither we nor the elephants moved. Then without warning, the two guides started running. A split second later, the elephants started crashing through the trees, the thud of their steps reverberating through the ground.

I ran. Branches and twigs scratched my arms and face as I tried to follow where the guides had gone, all the while feeling the force of the elephants' closing in.

After what seemed a lifetime, I saw light from the village beyond and found my way to the river. But its low point, where we had crossed earlier, was to the right in the direction of the elephants. I ran to the left as fast as my feet would carry me, then jumped into the river and swam like the blazes the 100 or so feet to the other side, not looking back.

Back at the village, I saw the two guides and started walking towards them. When they saw me, they avoided my gaze and just walked away, heads down. Then, I had that beer.

Got a few actually….
I’m quite good with most animals, not overly keen on spiders, but the one I had on the roof of a hut in Northern Thailand was the size of a dinner plate and the biggest I’ve ever, ever seen in the wild. We’d arrived about 2am and there were no other huts available, (the mate I was with was shit scared of spiders so there was no point asking him to swap). I just made sure the mozzie net was tucked in properly and went to sleep.

Same hut, day as we were checking out, I’m having a shower. Noticed what looked like a tail above my head. Turns out that was a Banded Krait and can do you a bit of mischief!

Was knocked out by a baby elephant called Suzy. Got too close when I was feeding it in one of these sanctuary’s. Soon as the food was gone and I’m standing directly in front of it, the trunk’s came straight up, hit me on my chin and floored me!

Saw a couple of these running around - http://www.pattayaunlimited.com/thailands-monster-poisonous-centipede/ - horrible looking fuckers they are. Quick as well!

Slapped round the face by a gibbon!

Most scared I’ve ever been though, was round an old mates in South Woodford. He had an Alsatian that was well known for being a moody fucker and you basically didn’t go near it. We were in his room having a smoke and he’s popped to the car to go and get something. A little while later, in the doorway to the bedroom is this fucking dog staring at me, snarling baring it’s teeth! Absolutely shit my pants! Thankfully, mate’s come back, heard me calling for him like a scared baby girl, run up and dragged it away!!

Years ago I was caught in Kings' Cross tube station when Leeds supporters arrived in London for the Charity Shield.
Sort of wildebeest migration.

I came face to face with a Death Adder in the outback and it actually bit me.

After 3 days of difficulty breathing, paralysis, drooling, massive hemorrhaging and exctrutiating pain it finally died.
